C. Michael Hawn

Michael Hawn is the University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Church Music, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University (SMU), Dallas, Texas, where he retired in 2017 from full-time teaching after 25 years. Relocating to Richmond, Virginia, he continues as Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Director of the Doctor of Pastoral Music degree program at SMU. Hawn is the author of numerous books and publications, many on global song. His most recent book is New Songs of Celebrations Render: Congregational Singing in the Twenty-First Century (GIA Publications, 2013). Currently, he is preparing a revision of the introductory hymnology survey, Sing with Understanding (Eskew and McElrath, 1980, 1995), and is the USA Editor for the international online subscription resource Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology and writes a weekly online hymn commentary for United Methodists entitled History of Hymns.
